How do I address the reality that my physical education class has enormous skill-level diversity — from students who are accomplished sport athletes to students who have rarely been physically active and who are deeply uncomfortable in PE class — without reinforcing exclusion and without boring the most skilled students while overwhelming the least skilled? Skill diversity in PE is almost universal, and it is the central pedagogical challenge the Mosston Inclusion Style (Style E) was specifically designed to address. But Inclusion Style alone is not sufficient — it must be combined with a broader pedagogical commitment to genuine inclusion and a classroom culture that values multiple forms of physical competence.
The Inclusion Style's core design: any task can be presented at multiple performance levels, and students self-select their entry level. 'Jump over the rope at the height that challenges you' — the rope is placed at different heights; students choose the height that is difficult but achievable. 'Dribble the basketball with the non-dominant hand at the speed that challenges you' — some students can barely control the ball walking; others can dribble full-speed; the task is the same but the execution varies. This simple structure eliminates the public exposure of having to attempt a task at an inappropriate level.
Beyond Inclusion Style: build a class culture where multiple physical competencies are named and valued, not only ball-sport skill. Some students who struggle with soccer ball control are excellent at balancing, coordination tasks, or physical endurance. The student who has the highest TPSR Level 4 behavior — who most consistently helps and supports classmates — is doing something athletic that deserves recognition. Name it publicly.
Pedagogically group students for development activities, not just for games. During skill development time, small groups working at similar levels can receive instruction appropriately pitched to their development — this is not ability tracking but differentiated practice time. During game play, use modified rules and equipment that reduce the advantage of high skill (smaller fields; different equipment; point systems that reward collaboration).
