(1) Use strategic translanguaging even without speaking the language: You can design activities that allow students to use their home languages for cognitive processing without you needing to speak those languages. "Think in your home language first, then share in English" — students use their home language to form ideas before expressing them in English. Bilingual pair work — students who share a home language discuss concepts together in that language and then report back to the class in English. You may not understand the home language discussion, but you can observe engagement and then assess through the English report.
(2) Leverage multilingual resources: Bilingual glossaries (developed by students; shared with the class); translation apps (used purposefully, not as a crutch); home language labels alongside English labels on classroom visual resources; dual-language books when available; family members as language consultants. You can explicitly honor these resources rather than treating them as workarounds.
(3) Learn basic respect phrases in students' home languages: You cannot be fluent in 10 languages, but learning to say "good morning"; "thank you"; "well done" in students' home languages communicates respect and willingness that students feel and respond to powerfully.
(4) Advocate for bilingual support: In schools with significant ELL populations, there should be bilingual paraprofessionals; community liaisons; and access to bilingual assessment. If these are absent, advocate for them as an equity requirement, not a luxury.
