Students who receive ongoing, actionable feedback throughout a unit and who develop self-assessment capacity perform better on end-of-unit tests than those who receive only summative evaluation. The formative assessment conversation need not be anti-grade; it can be pro-grade-improvement.
- Use ungraded formative tasks explicitly: Designate some tasks explicitly as "learning checkpoints" or "practice runs" that are not graded — explaining to students and parents that these tasks are opportunities to identify what needs more work before the graded assessment. Students who understand that ungraded work helps them perform better on graded work participate more authentically than those who treat every task as a potential grade.
- Make the grade-improvement mechanism visible: When students revise work in response to feedback and their scores improve, make that improvement visible and explicitly connect it to the feedback process — "This student received a 65 on the first draft; after using our peer feedback protocol and revising, they earned an 88. That improvement is what formative feedback is designed to produce."
- Start small: One formative assessment practice — exit tickets for one unit; a single peer feedback protocol for one major assignment — builds evidence and confidence before scaling to a whole-class assessment redesign. Demonstrate the value before asking for broader change.
